The Australian National University, informally known as ANU, was established by an Act of Parliament on 1st August 1946. The university is a public university and was founded with the legislated purpose of promoting and conducting research in Australia. Australian National University is located in Australia’s capital city, Canberra.
Victoria University, or as it is informally known VU, is a dual sector tertiary institution located in Melbourne, Victoria. VU provides both higher education and TAFE qualifications to students in over ten campuses. Victoria University was formed in 1990, but its predecessor institutions can trace their origins back to 1916. VU is one of eight Australian universities to offer both higher education, and TAFE and continuing education to students.

The University of the Sunshine Coast, or as it is informally known USC, is a public university located in Queensland on the Sunshine Coast. Its main campus in Sunshine Coast is a 100 hectare flora and fauna reserve which adjoins the Mooloolah River National Park, 100km north of the Brisbane. USC was formed in 1996, initially operating as the Sunshine Coast University College until 1999 when it adopted its current name.

The university was established in 1989 through an Act of the Western Australian Parliament. The University of Notre Dame Australia opened its doors and began teaching in 1992.

This large student body is supported by a full time staff of 3,805, with a student to staff ration of 22 to 5.

Murdoch is a public university, and is named in honour of Sir Walter Murdoch, the founding Professor of English, and former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia. Murdoch University is home to 18,000 students including 2,000 international students, who are supported by 1500 staff.
The University of Ballarat, or as it is informally known, UB, is a university located in Ballarat, Victoria. The university is a dual sector university, providing both TAFE and university degree qualifications. University of Ballarat was founded by an Act of the Victorian Parliament in 1994, which gave the Ballarat College of Advanced Education official university status. It then subsequently merged with the Wimmera Institute of TAFE, and the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries (1870), to create a large dual sector university.
Southern Cross University, or as it is informally known SCU, is a regional university located in the north coast of New South Wales. Southern Cross University was formed on 1st January 1994 as a result of the decentralization of University of New England campuses, which was formed in 1989. SCU was formed under an Act of Parliament, and since its formation has grown quickly, with a current student body of 15,000 students.
Central Queensland University, also known as CQUniversity is located in Rockhampton, Queensland. CQUniversity was established under its current name in 1994, but its origins can be traced back to 1967, when it was called the Queensland institute of Technology. CQUniversity has undergone a number of name changes and rebranding, as the institution changed its name in 1969 to University College of Central Queensland, and again in 1992 to the University of Central Queensland.
The University of New England, also known as UNE, is a public university located in Armidale, New South Wales. The University of New England was founded in 1938 as the New England University College, a branch of the University of Sydney. It became independent in 1954, and currently is home to 18,000 students. It is the first university in Australia to be established outside a capital city.
Charles Darwin University, also known informally as CDU, is a public university located in Darwin, Northern Territory. CDU is the only university in the Northern Territory, and offers dual sector education, providing both higher education courses, and TAFE courses, with flexible study options. CDU is the largest tertiary education institution in the Northern Territory, and has five campuses in Darwin, as well as three training centres in Jabiru, Tennant Creek and Yulara.
The University of Southern Queensland, also known as USQ is located in Toowoomba, Queensland. USQ was formed in 1967 under the name Queensland Institute of Technology. It has since undergone a number of name changes and rebranding, starting in 1971 when it was called Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, and then the University College of Southern Queensland in 1990, finally to adopt is current name, USQ, in 1992. The University of Southern Queensland has a large campus in Hervey Bay, which is to the north of Brisbane, and has recently, in 2006, formed a new campus in Springfield, one of the outer suburbs of Brisbane.
The Australian Defence Force Academy or, ADFA is military academy that provides both tertiary education, and military training for junior officers of the Australian Defence Force. ADFA provides training to officers in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Australian Regular Army (ARA), and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). ADFA additionally provides post graduate study options for civilians, public servants and for senior Australian Defence Force personnel.
