University Of Sydney
Location:  Sydney, New South Wales
The University of Sydney, also known informally as USYD, was established in 1850, and is the oldest university in Australia. USYD has a student population of 45,182 students, supported by 5,921 staff, making the university the second largest in Australia, behind Monash University. The University of Sydney is a member of the prestigious Australian lobby group for research intensive universities, the ‘Group of Eight.’ The University of Sydney is also a member of the Academic Consortium 21, the Worldwide Universities Network (WNN), and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).

University Of New South Wales
Location:  Sydney, New South Wales
University of New South Wales, or as it is known informally, UNSW, is a public university located in Kensington, 7km from the Sydney CBD. UNSW was founded in 1949 and has a student body of 42,360 students, including over 9,200 students who herald from over 130 different countries. This large student population is supported by 6,359 staff. UNSW offers students more than 300 undergraduate courses, and amazingly, 600 post graduate programs.

Bond University

Bond University is the first private university established in Australia in 1987. Bond’s main campus is situated in Robina, Gold Coast Queensland, on a picturesque 49.86 hectares. Bond is unique to other Australian universities as it schedules three semesters each year, starting in January, May, and September. The University of Adelaide, informally known as Adelaide Uni is a public university, situated in Adelaide, South Australia. Adelaide Uni was founded in 1874, after a £20,000 donation by copper miner and grazier, Walter Watson Hughes. It is the 3rd oldest university in Australia.

The University of Western Sydney, informally known as UWS, is located in Western Sydney, New South Wales. UWS has a student population of 35,061 students, supported by 1,192 academic staff which makes UWS the 3rd largest university by student enrolment in Sydney. UWS has a number of campuses across Sydney, which total 4050 hectares.

Location:  Brisbane, Queensland
The University of Queensland, also known informally as UQ was founded in 1909, over 100 years ago, and is the oldest university in Queensland, and fifth in Australia. The university is a public university, and is located in Brisbane. The main campus, St Lucia, is located in the southwest of the Brisbane CBD.  The University of Queensland is a member of the prestigious Australian lobby group ‘Group of Eight’, and the Universitas 21, which is an international network of universities dedicated to research. The university is also colloquially known as a ‘sandstone’ university due to its age, and its membership in the G8.

The University of Melbourne or Melbourne Uni as it is informally known, was founded in 1853 and is Australia’s second oldest university. The university is a public university situated in Melbourne, Victoria, with its main campus located in Parkville, north of the Melbourne CBD. The university has a number of other campuses across Victoria.

Curtin University Of Technology
Location:  Perth, Western Australia
Curtin University of Technology, or simply Curtin, is located in Perth, Western Australia, and is the state’s largest university. Curtin University began operating under its current name in 1986, and previously operated as the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT). The university named after John Curtin, a former Prime Minister of Australia, who led Australia during part of World War II, from 1941-1945. The University has a large student body of over 42,450 students, including 16,000 international students. This large student body is supported by approximately 3,000 staff.

The University of Wollongong, informally known as UOW, was founded in 1951, and is a public university. The university is situated eighty kilometres south of Sydney in the coastal city of Wollongong. UOW was originally a division of the New South Wales University of Technology which was established in 1951 in Wollongong.

University Of Tasmania
Location:  Hobart, Tasmania
The University of Tasmania, or as it is informally known, UTAS, was established on 1st January, 1890, and is located in Tasmania. UTAS, a public university was the fourth university to be formed in Australia during the 19th century. Due to its long history as a university, UTAS is considered to be a ‘sandstone’ university, and is also a member of the International Association of Commonwealth Universities (IACU).

Griffith University
Location:  Gold Coast, Queensland
Griffith University or simply Griffith is a public university based on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, Australia.  There are over 37,000 undergraduate students, over 8,800 international students from 119 countries and over 3500 full time staff. Griffith University was formed in 1971 and is named after Sir Samuel Griffith, who was a former Premier of Queensland, and also the Chief Justice of the Queensland Supreme Court, and Chief Justice of Australian High Court. Griffith University has the distinction of being the 9th largest higher education institution in Australia, and its Gold Coast campus is one of the fast growing campuses in Australia.

La Trobe University
Location:  Melbourne, Victoria
La Trobe University, or simply La Trobe, is the 3rd oldest university in Victoria. La Trobe was founded in 1964 by an Act of Parliament. La Trobe has seven campuses in Victoria, and has the distinction of being named after Charles Joseph La Trobe. Charles La Trobe was one of the early colonial leaders in Victoria, undertaking the task of being the first Lieutenant Governor of Victoria from 1851 to 1854 and was also the first Superintendent of the Port Phillip District from 1839 to 1850.

The University of South Australia, or as it is informally known UniSA, is a public university situation in South Australia. UniSA was established in 1991 when the South Australian Institute of Technology merged with the Colleges of Advanced Education. Although the current institution is relatively new, the University of South Australia can trace its history back to its antecedent institution, the South Australian School of Arts, which dates to 1856, making it one of the oldest art schools in Australia.

Macquarie University, or as it is informally known, Macq Uni, is a public university located in Sydney, New South Wales. The main campus is located at Macquarie Park, 16km from the Sydney CBD. Macquarie University was established in 1964 by the New South Government. The student body at Macquarie University is diverse, with 30% of students originating from overseas, and 35% undertaking postgraduate study.

Charles Sturt University, or as it is informally known CSU, is a multi-campus university, situated in Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales. CSU was formed on July 1, 1989 and has the distinction of being the largest non-metropolitan university in Australia, providing 496 courses.

The University of Technology Sydney, also known as UTS, is located in Sydney, New South Wales. UTS has the distinction of being the only university with main campuses within the CBD of Sydney. The University of Technology Sydney was established in 1988, however the origins of its antecedent institution the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts, which is the oldest Mechanic’s Institute in Australia, can be traced back to the early 1870’s.

Royal Melbourne Institute Of Technology

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, also known by the acronym RMIT, is a public university and vocational education provider situated in Melbourne Victoria. The university was founded in 1887 by philanthropist and grazier The Hon. Francis Ormond, making the university the 7th oldest in Australia, and the 3rd oldest higher education institution in Victoria. RMIT has two key branches, RMIT University, which encompasses RMIT TAFE, and RMIT International University.

The university is a public university and was founded with the legislated purpose of promoting and conducting research in Australia. Victoria University, or as it is informally known VU, is a dual sector tertiary institution located in Melbourne, Victoria. VU provides both higher education and TAFE qualifications to students in over ten campuses. Victoria University was formed in 1990, but its predecessor institutions can trace their origins back to 1916. VU is one of eight Australian universities to offer both higher education, and TAFE and continuing education to students.
